OKAY GIRL- Coming 1.12.27
In OKAY GIRL, you’ll meet 16-year-old Skye Amethyst Brown almost one year after her dear uncle’s alleged accidental overdose. Just when she starts to feel like she’s okay, her trauma is compounded by a public betrayal and viral humiliation at the end of an almost perfect Junior prom. In the aftermath Skye does what so many teens do— she pretends to be okay.
Skye hides panic attacks. She keeps achieving. She compulsively reads The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath like a lifeline, seeing her own unnamed despair reflected back at her.
All while juggling ride-or-die friendships, well-meaning parents, slipping grades (for the first time ever), and the hopeful confusion of an accidental crush on a boy who should have NOT AN OPTION stamped across his forehead. She masks and copes until one day, she can’t.
In Okay Girl I explore how often young people, especially Black girls, are rewarded for silence and composure, even when it comes at a great cost. What happens when emotional restraint is mistaken for resilience? When survival gets mislabeled as strength?
I wrote Okay Girl for anyone who learned early how to perform okay-cosplay and to honor the ways young people quietly survive before they know how to heal.
Writing this book healed parts of my inner child. I hope it finds the readers who need language for their interior worlds while they are young.
Okay Girl is giving I’m Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter meets The Perks of Being a Wallflower with a taste of Girl Interrupted, but make it Black and #bookish.
